Last week the Grade 5s have been focussing on the Learner Profile of being more caring. Being kind to each other and considerate to other people has been something that we are learning to do and are trying to do every day. Part of showing that we care is that we look at the needs of others and we try to make a difference in their lives. We are beginning to learn that doing something kind for someone else leaves you with a wonderful feeling inside and you feel happy! The amazing thing about serving others and giving is that it positively affects the giver. When we think of kindness, we assume that it has to be some grand act in order to count - the Grade 5s are learning that something as simple as a gentle word, a smile, or a small token can dramatically impact another person in a positive way.
We thought of an idea that we could do something for someone else. We decided to make an activity for the Kindergarten students. In our art lessons, the Grade 5s chose a picture that they coloured in but left out the outline of the picture. Using a glue gun, they then stuck colourful straws where the outline should be.
The Grade 5 students then took their picture down to the kindergarten class and did the activity together with them. Using a shoelace, the kindergarten children practised their fine-motor skills to thread the shoelace around the picture to complete it.
This was enjoyed by all students - big and small! The reflection written by the Grade 5 students indicated that they enjoyed the activity and they went down memory lane and told stories of their lives in kindergarten.
We must always remember that wherever you are in life, there is always someone you can help in some way. When you look for ways to help others, you’ll find that you are truly blessed in return.
