The Grade 5 class have learnt a lot in their Unit of inquiry “How We Express Ourselves”. The theme of the unit was “Architecture” and the students focussed on architecture as a form of expression reflecting culture throughout history. The students discovered the elements of architectural design, developed an appreciation of the aesthetic in architecture throughout history and discovered different types of architecture from different times in history.
They've discovered how people built amazing things throughout the years. They started with the ancient Egyptian pyramids and moved on to Greek orders and Roman aqueducts. They also learnt about Gothic cathedrals and fancy castles and modern skyscrapers. These young learners figured out how architects and builders from the past have shaped our world today.
They culminated their unit with choosing a famous building and doing research about that building and then a presentation for the class. They had fun building a model of their chosen building. These budding architects of tomorrow are building a foundation of knowledge that bridges the past and the future and igniting their imaginations. We definitely have the potential for some future architects at CISS!
